Denim

Tutors:  Lise Sansen, Flavie Roquette/ fashion designers

Project manager: Mathieu Marion

Objectives:
This project aims to let the classes see how denim, the material used to make jeans, became a universal fabric. With the help of a fashion designer, the pupils discuss changes in fashions and trends, draw on their own knowledge of jeans and express their viewpoint through an original design.

Workshops:
What are jeans exactly?
Jeans have been a great success for years. What is the history of this garment and how do the pupils see the phenomenon? What are the stakes in manufacturing and marketing jeans? In this stage, the pupils collected texts, images and films to plunge into the world of jeans.

Jeans Lab
In the second stage, the pupils studied jeans closely: their shape, fabric, characteristics, rivets, metal buttons and topstitching were described in detail, analysed and transformed. The tutor guided them through various stages in design (trend book, sketches, drawings, research for materials, etc.) so the class project gradually took shape.

These are our jeans
In the final stage, the pupils made their own jeans. They learned the techniques of cutting and sewing, whether they were making new models or reworking old ones. Their ideas took concrete form. The point was not only to make jeans, but to express their own ideas.

Outcome:
Each class morphed into a fashion house for a day to express its approach to jeans: fashion drawings, garments and styles were displayed. Discussions on looks and fashions were all part of the day's work. For the class from Collège Pablo Picasso (Montfermeil), the presentation was held in the town hall.
