A simple movement

Since 2009, the Seine-Saint-Denis County Council has been backing “la Culture et l’Art au Collège (CAC)”. This project is based to a large extent on the presence in class for several weeks (40h) of an artist or scientist whose mission is to engage the students in a process of research and creation.

Tutors: Badrane Zinoubi, Sana Zbidi/ PhD student in biomechanics, François Merland/ biomechanics specialist and sports coach

Project manager: Stéphane Coulaud

Objectives:
For an ordinary person, jumping, running, throwing or pushing an object seems to be almost natural. For top sportsmen and women striving for victory, a simple movement can be vertiginous: it involves research into movement, power and coordination. Using examples from the sporting world, the pupils draw up a protocol combining measurements, videos, and analyses to perfect their movements.

Workshop:
What is biomechanics?
In a brief introduction, the tutor explained the application of the discipline, in particular the study of a sportsman’s movements in order to improve performance. Individual practices in athletics were used as an illustration.

Natural aptitudes
Each class drew up a training program based on practices used in many sports. Jumping, throwing and running were selected and each movement was studied and analysed.

Knowledge to improve performance
Photographs and videos were the tools and raw materials used to analyse of a sportsman’s movements. The pupils could then see and assess their natural abilities and, after analysis in class, improve their performance.

Exhibition:
An exhibition of measurements, photographs and videos made in the workshop was presented in the documentation centre. The pupils explained how biomechanics was used, through a training program, to improve the pupils’ performance.
