Digital dreams

Culture and art in intermediate schools (CAC)/ Call for projects by the Conseil Général de la Seine-Saint-Denis, initiated in 2009.

Tutors: Julien Hilmoine, Luc Thauvin, Antoine Vaton/ filmmakers

Project manager: Mathieu Marion

Objectives:
A filmmaker helps the class make a film about their relationship to dreams. What is a dream? How can it be told? Can it be interpreted or reinterpreted? How can we share its complexity and what tools can we use to do so?
The classes are issued with several digital tablets (iPad) to help them explore these questions and experiment with new languages. This leads to a new form of group research and visual narration.

Workshops:
Discussing the theme
To start with, the tutor encouraged the pupils to think about their relationship to dreams. The pupils talked about the way they dream and each person was asked to describe one dream in detail. The basic idea was to keep the questions open, to encourage them to talk, listen to the others and express their attitude to dreams.

Learning to use the tablet – experimenting with the theme and images
The pupils explored the potential of the iPad for creating an image (sound codes, field size, angle of view, composition of the image, movements, interactive links, web documentary application, etc.). The class then began to experiment in mini workshops: recreating a dream, inventing a dream, controlling dreams, etc. they were able to work on the narrative, technical and aesthetic aspects of their future multimedia creation.

Class production
In the last phase, they developed a personal approach to dreams and the new languages offered by the tablet. This workshop was divided into three parts: a writing session based on brainstorming and game storming, using different time schemes and various screens; preparation of a functional storyboard and a simple multimedia narrative structure; and production (web documentary, web fiction, etc.).

Outcome:
On 27 May 2014, the classes showed their films at Le Blanc Mesnil Culture Forum. Before showing their film, the pupils explained the work they had done. After the film, the pupils talked about their experience. This gave the classes an opportunity to see that dreams are a rich source of ideas and representation.
